M3GAN Is Already a Queer Icon

In addition to being a box office success, M3GAN has resonated with audiences, specifically the LGBTQ+ community who have already labeled the film's killer doll a queer icon of sorts. "I actually asked one of my friends who is a gay man about that, and he was saying this set-up is actually found family, where this little girl has lost her family, and she has to go live with her aunt," Cooper said. "Then this doll is also brought into the situation. That resonates for a lot of people in the gay community, the idea of found family."

M3GAN has also been favorably compared to another horror doll -- The Conjuring Universe's Annabelle. James Wan, who serves as a producer on both franchises, was recently asked which terrifying doll would win in a fight. "This is what I'll say -- the distinguishing difference is M3GAN is a physical doll that gets up and walks around. She's an AI machine. She can do that. Annabelle is just a doll. She's a possessed doll. She doesn't actually hit anyone. It's the demon that is latched onto her," Wan said. Blumhouse founder Jason Blum agreed with Wan, saying, "Yeah, no contest. It's M3GAN."

In addition to Williams, M3GAN stars Violet McGraw, Amie Donald, Jenna Davis, Jen Van Epps, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Jack Cassidy, Ronny Chieng, Lori Dungey, Amy Usherwood, Stephane Garneau-Monten, Arlo Green and Kira Josephson. M3GAN is currently playing in theaters.
