Bayron City's shady underworld runs red with blood and only Demon hunters can stop the carnage. In Episode 4, the battle takes a turn for the worse.
Engage Kiss has burst onto the scene in the Summer 2022 anime season, a sci-fi/fantasy action story starring the Demon hunter Ogata Shu and his A-ranked Demon friend, the pink-haired girl Kisara. Their job is to respond to D-disasters and dispatch deadly Demons, and the stakes reach all-new heights in Episode 4.
Shu and Kisara are powerful thanks to their memory-based contract, but not even they can always save the day. In Episode 4, Demons get involved in the bloody battles between crime families in Bayron City's underworld -- even for Shu and Kisara, it will be a tough case to crack. They have never fought a battle quite like this one before.
Episode 4 of Engage Kiss explores some drama between Kisara, Ayano and Shu. But elsewhere in the city's shadows, things are getting out of hand quickly, which Shu and his friends soon notice as well. The man from Episode 3 who became a butterfly Demon -- a certain Tony Rossi -- has been captured and is involved in a fierce gang war between his Orcas mafia family and the rival Serpiente family.
Shu, Ayano and Kisara have all seen Tony before; they eagerly wish to join the investigation to get info on him as well as the shady businessman who had given him his Demon contract. Interestingly, this shady salesman may also be the one who gave Yoshito his Demon powers in an earlier episode.
Things quickly spiral out of control, however. Serpiente thugs break into the hospital and assassinate Tony in his bed as revenge for his previous actions against them, and Tony's girlfriend Maria is in anguish over the loss. Then, Morgan and the other officers storm the Orcas mafia's hideout to capture any more Demons that might be there -- the police expect the Orcas members to use another demon to strike back at the Serpiente gang. To their shock, they find a Demon that has already wiped out the Orcas gang there. Did it just betray its summoners and go rogue? Or is this a Demon the Serpiente family sent to escalate the feud? That's when Shu himself arrives to save the day -- if he can.
Shu storms the Orcas hideout to face the Demon threat. To his shock, the Demon has a distinctly feminine humanoid appearance from long dark hair to a red cocktail dress -- along with huge blades for arms. Shu also learns that this ladylike Demon is none other than Maria who, until now, hadn't gotten herself involved in her late boyfriend's criminal antics. Maria had once been an innocent bystander, but now she's in the thick of the action.
Maria is going on a vengeful killing spree to punish everyone -- friend and foe alike -- responsible for getting Tony involved in the dangers of crime life and Demon powers. This makes her Shu's newest target, but perhaps he can sympathize with her deep down. Who can blame her for being so angry at her boyfriend's untimely demise? It was Tony's criminal allies who had pushed him to become a Demon, thus making himself a target for the Serpiente crime family.
This doesn't absolve Maria of her many murders as Engage Kiss's newest Demon, but it does show how tragic this world can be, especially in Bayron City's cyberpunk-style underworld. Anyone not living in Bayron's shiny upper crust must do whatever they can to survive, and making a deal with the devil is practically mundane. The have-nots and rogues in this world face a grim reality that Shu and Ayano can barely even imagine, and no doubt there are many other desperate Marias making deals to become Demons.
It's often said that desperation is what breeds crime, or in this case Demon-fueled crime. That's what happens when Bayron City's elite are lost in their own world and neglect the ever-growing underclass right beneath their feet. Maria's tragic transformation into a Demon is just one more sign of how truly warped and desperate this city really is.
